How to Check a Vehicle Title in Texas Before Selling Your Car
If you are planning to sell a vehicle in Texas, knowing its title status can help prevent delays and clarify what documents may be needed. A title can show important information about vehicle ownership, and the vehicle’s record may also include a lien or a title brand related to previous damage.
You do not need to research every part of the vehicle’s history before contacting a buyer. However, knowing what title you have—and whether a lien is still recorded—can make the selling process easier to understand.
Start With the VIN
The Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN, identifies a specific vehicle. According to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, the VIN can usually be found:
- On the driver’s side of the dashboard near the windshield
- On the driver’s door or door jamb
- On the vehicle title
- On an insurance card or policy
- Checking that the VIN on your paperwork matches the VIN on the vehicle is a useful first step.
What Can a Vehicle Title History Show?
The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles provides a Title Check resource that directs consumers to approved providers using the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS).
Depending on the available records, a title-history report may provide information about the vehicle’s title status and whether it has previously been reported as junk, salvage, or a total loss.
This information can be useful when you are trying to understand why a vehicle has a particular title brand or when the paperwork does not match what you expected.
Check Whether a Lien Is Still Recorded
A lien is especially important when preparing to sell a vehicle.
If a vehicle was financed, the lender may have been listed as the lienholder. Paying off the loan does not always mean the paperwork in your possession immediately shows that the lien has been released.
TxDMV explains that when a lien recorded on a paper title has been paid, documentation from the lienholder may be required to remove it. Electronic liens are handled through Texas’s Electronic Lien and Title system.
If you are unsure whether an old lien has been properly released, verify the status before assuming the vehicle has a clear title.
What If You Lost the Texas Title?
Losing the physical title does not necessarily mean the vehicle’s ownership record has disappeared.
TxDMV allows eligible vehicle owners to request a certified copy of a Texas title. The agency currently uses Form VTR-34, Application for a Certified Copy of Title, and identification and ownership requirements apply.
If a lien is still recorded, additional documentation from the lienholder may also be required.

Can You Sell a Vehicle Without the Physical Title?
A title is preferred when selling a vehicle to Junk Car Buyers-R-Us, but some situations may be reviewed when the physical Texas title is unavailable.

That does not automatically prevent you from asking for an evaluation.
